ABOUT DR. D'AMATO: Dr. Kenneth D’Amato received his Bachelor of Arts in Zoology at the University of Maine. He then graduated from Kansas City University of Medicine and Bioscience College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kansas City, Missouri with his Doctor of Osteopathy degree. He returned to Maine to complete one year internship at the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine in Portland. For three years, he served as Medical Director of the Eagle Lake Health Center with the National Health Services Corp., and then entered orthopedic residency at Memorial Hospital in York, Pennsylvania, finishing in 1985. For three years, Dr. D’Amato served as Staff Orthopedist at the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine (OHM) in Portland, and at Northern Cumberland Memorial Orthopedic Hospital in Bridgeton, Maine. From 1988 to 2008, he was Staff Physician at Davis Memorial Hospital (DMH) in Elkins, West Virginia. During this period of time, Dr. D’Amato was a preceptor at Alderson-Broaddus College in Phillippi, WV, as well as at West Virginia University School of Nursing in Morgantown, WV. From 1999 to 2002, he was Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopedics at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. D’Amato is Board Certified with the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He is a member of the following organizations: American Osteopathic Association, American Osteopathic Association of Orthopedics, West Virginia Osteopathic Association, Virginia Osteopathic Association, Medical Society of Virginia, and Association of Surgical Educators. Dr. D’Amato joined VCOM in 2009, where he serves as Clinical Chair for the Department of Surgery, and is Assistant Professor of Surgery and Anatomy. |

ABOUT DR. ARMSTRONG: Dr. Paul Armstrong received his Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. He obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama in 1993. He completed his surgical residency and internship at the University of Alabama Medical Center in 1998. Dr. Armstrong is board certified with the American Board of Surgery and the National Board of Medical Examiners. He is currently in private practice at Abingdon Surgical Associates in Abingdon, Virginia, and is affiliated with Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA. ABOUT DR. ASHLEY: Dr. Thomas Ashley received his BS degree in Chemistry (with distinction) at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He earned his Medical Degree at Wayne State University. His General Surgery Residency, as well as his fellowship in Colorectal Surgery, were completed at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Ashley joined Spartanburg Regional in 1998. Although fellowship trained in colorectal surgery, Dr. Ashley considers himself a general surgeon and was director of the trauma service at SRMC for many years. He remains active in trauma and staffs the trauma service with Drs. Morrow and Lombardozzi. Dr. Ashley is the director of the skills laboratory and has won several resident teaching awards. Dr. Ashley is a member of several professional committees, including the Trauma Case Review, Trauma Multidisciplinary, Medical Staff Quality Council, Oncology Colorectal/GI Multidisciplinary, and the Utilization Management Committee. Dr. Ashley is board certified with the American Board of Surgery. He currently practices at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in Spartanburg, SC, where he is the Director of the Surgical Skills Lab. |

ABOUT DR. BENDER: Dr. Lawrence Bender received his DO degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in Chicago, IL. His internship was done at the Garden City Osteopathic Hospital in Garden City, MI. One year of General Surgical Residency was completed at the Metropolitan-Cherry Hill Hospitals in Philadelphia, PA and Cherry Hill, NJ, as well as at the Harrisburg Community General Osteopathic Hospital in Harrisburg, PA. Dr. Bender completed a three year residency at Allentown Osteopathic Hospital in Allentown, PA. His last year of residency included the following: Adult / Geriatric Urology, Pediatric Urology, Urologic Oncology, and major urologic surgeries. Dr. Goldstein has been in practice since 1982. He is board certified through the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. |

ABOUT DR. BISSELL: Dr. Charles Bissell received his BA degree in Chemistry at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio in 1986, where he was Chairman of the Student Medical Advisory Committee. He received his Medical Degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1990. Internship was completed at Naval Medical Center in San Diego, California in 1991. During his service in the Navy, he served as the US Navy Flight Surgeon until 1994, after which he completed his residency at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, California where he served as Advanced Trauma Life Support Instructor. He earned his Fellowship in Laparoendoscopic Surgery at the University of Texas – Houston Northwest Medical Center. Dr. Bissell is a member of the following medical organizations: Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, and the Medical Society of Virginia. BORO: Dr. Thomas Boro received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 2005, and completed residency at Inova Fairfax Hospital in 2010 where he served on several committees, including the Hospital Resident Education Committee. He previously served as an adjunct instructor at the Center for Trauma and Critical Care, Department of Surgery, for Medical College of Virginia. ABOUT DR. BREINER: Dr. Michael Breiner earned His medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA. ABOUT DR. CLOUD: Dr. William Cloud received his Medical Degree in 1977 from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville, Virginia. He did a year of Internship at the University of Mississippi in Jackson, MS. He then returned to the University of Virginia where he obtained his Fellowship in Surgical Research. In 1983, Dr. Cloud completed his Residency at the University of Virginia in General and Vascular Surgery. Dr. Cloud is Board Certified with clinical experience in all areas of general surgery including vascular, endocrine, trauma, cancer and abdominal surgery with increasing focus on advanced laparoscopic surgery and complex GI surgery. He has been a clinical instructor for surgical residents and practicing surgeons for several years. He received “Teacher of the Year” Award from surgical residents at Carolinas Medical Center in 1992. Dr. Cloud is currently enrolled in the Master of Academic Medicine program at the University of Southern California, with a projected Master of Education in Academic Medicine in 2011. |

He is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a recipient of the Certificate of Added Qualification in Hand Surgery. Dr. Harris is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. ABOUT DR. HIRD: Dr. Barry Hird received his BA degree in Microbiology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, CA in 1986, where he graduated Cum Laude, with distinction in the major. In 1991, he earned his medical degree at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI, where he graduated in the top 25 percent of his class. Dr. Hird did his surgical residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. In addition to his clinical work, he pursued a productive one-year research hiatus (in the cardiac surgery laboratory). Upon completion of residency in 1997 he entered into private practice in Conway, SC. He spent eight years in private practice before moving on to a breast fellowship at the University of Michigan. Dr. Hird joined the faculty at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in 2005. He has been an instrumental part of improving their teaching conferences and leads a bi-monthly conference devoted to reviewing SESAP (Surgical Education and Self Assessment Program). Dr. Hird is board certified and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and the American Society of Breast Disease. |

ABOUT DR. LOMBARDOZZI: Dr. Kristine Lombardozzi received her Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and Psychology at the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota in 1991. She earned her Medical Degree in 1995 at the University of Minnesota Medical School. Dr. Lombardozzi is a 2000 graduate of the surgical residency at Methodist Hospital of Indiana/ Indiana University. She completed critical care fellowship training at the Orlando Regional Medical Center in 2001. Dr. Lombardozzi returned to Indiana after her fellowship where she was an assistant clinical professor at Indiana University and trauma/critical care faculty at the Clarian Health Care System. She came to Spartanburg in 2004. While at Spartanburg Regional she initiated a Fundamental Critical Care Support Course which is the only one offered in South Carolina. She jointly developed the surgical critical and trauma curriculum, as well as developed the curriculum for rotating residents and students. She is very active in regional and national critical care activities. Dr. Lombardozzi is board certified, and is a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) and actively participates on their membership committee. ABOUT DR. NGUYEN: Dr. Christophe Nguyen received his Medical Degree in 1997 from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He completed his Residency at the Medical University of South Carolina (Charleston), and received his Fellowship in Surgical Oncology from Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2006. Dr. Nguyen has published numerous works in both basic science and clinical peer-review journals. He has also presented such work at international meetings such as the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress, the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American Association for Cancer Research. Although his training spans the entire field of surgical oncology (head and neck, breast, thoracic and GI disease), he has developed particular interest in the surgical management of thoracic and foregut malignancies. Dr. Nguyen has introduced several new minimally- invasive thoracic surgical techniques, and is one of a just a few thoracic surgeons in the state performing video-assisted (VATS) lobectomies. Dr. Nguyen participates regularly at the resident didactic conferences and has already received one of the annual resident awards for teaching excellence. ABOUT DR. NIELSON: Dr. David Nielson earned a Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine from the California College of Podiatric Medicine, spending his last clinical year at University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio working with the renowned Dr. Lawrence Harkless. He completed his residency in foot and ankle surgery at Southeast Michigan/Kern Surgical Hospital, which was the first podiatric residency program in the nation. During his residency, Dr. Nielson served a visiting fellowship to the Ilizarov Scientific Centre for Restorative Traumatology and Orthopaedics in Kurgan, Russia. Dr. Nielson regularly serves on medical missions to underprivileged areas of the world. He is a member of Liga International-Flying Doctors of Mercy. He spent a year fellowship in wound care/research with Dr. David G. Armstrong and another year in reconstructive surgery for the Charcot foot. He speaks and writes fluent Spanish. ABOUT DR. ORR: Dr. Richard Orr earned his medical degree from the University of South Florida (Tampa) in 1977, and an MPH (epidemiology and biostatistics) from the University of Massachusetts in 1995. After completing his surgical residency (USF – 1982) and surgical oncology fellowship (Medical College of Virginia – 1984, he was in full-time academic practice at the University of Miami from 1984-86. He joined the Fallon Clinic, a multispecialty group practice in Worcester, MA in 1986 where he established a clinical practice as Chief of Surgical Oncology. While at Fallon, he contributed academically as an Assistant Program Director for the University of Massachusetts surgical residency and won awards as the Fallon clinic researcher of the year, and the surgical residency teacher of the year. Following eleven productive years at Fallon, Dr. Orr returned to the Midwest as a surgical oncologist and endocrine surgeon at the Marshfield Clinic – a very large multi-specialty group in central Wisconsin. Dr. Orr began practice at the Gibbs Regional Cancer Center in Spartanburg, SC in 1999. He is currently Director of Surgical Oncology, where he has been particularly active in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. In 2001, he was appointed Director of the General Surgery Residency at the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, and served in this capacity until June 2009. Dr. Orr has had faculty appointments at five different medical schools (has taught surgical residents for over 25 years), and is currently Professor of Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina. He has received a resident award for excellence in teaching, and is one of only three surgeons credentialed by the MD Anderson Network through Gibbs Cancer center. Dr. Orr has over 30 peer-reviewed publications and has presented his work at almost 100 national and regional meetings. Dr. Orr is board certified (and recertified) by the American Board of Surgery, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
