Elective Rotation

The sports medicine elective is a 2-4 week rotation depending on availability. This rotation is available to medical students and residents wishing to gain additional knowledge and experience in the field of sports medicine. During this rotation, the rotator will gain hands-on experience as a team physician and be involved in on-site management of recreational and sporting events if there are opportunities available. Each rotator will be able to demonstrate the ability to work with various team physicians involved in the total treatment of the athlete. This ability will include an understanding of relationships with athletes, parents, coaches, trainers, officials, medical consultants and various medical and para-medicine personnel.

Educational Purpose:

To give the rotator formal instruction, clinical experience, and opportunities to acquire expertise in the evaluation and management essential to the practice of sports medicine..

The rotator will demonstrate their competency in his/her ability to:

Evaluate athletes of all skill levels; including, adult, pediatric, disabled, geriatric, and pregnant athletes.

Apply wellness techniques in promoting health in areas of physical, mental and musculoskeletal fitness, as well as cardiovascular, pulmonary and spiritual health..

Understand the components of and perform a comprehensive sports history and physical examination on athletes including a thorough osteopathic biomechanical and structural examination.

Demonstrate awareness of special risk factors for sport-specific injuries, including but not limited to golf, football, basketball, wrestling, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, track and field and other exercise-related activities.
