VCOM Primary Care Sports Medicine
Primary Care Sports Medicine is a dynamic and rapidly growing subspecialty in the medical profession. The practice of sports medicine is the application of the physician's knowledge, skills, and attitudes to those engaged in sport and exercise. Primary Care Sports Medicine specialists recognize the need for a unique skill set in providing care for athletic patients. The goal of our program is to provide the sports medicine resident with the appropriate training to evaluate and optimize the athlete-patient's performance while mitigating the effects of acute and chronic disease and injury on health and performance. This program is designed to meet all of the special requirements put forth by the American Osteopathic Association for training programs in primary care sports medicine. Those skills extend across a vast population of patients: pediatric athletes, high school athletes, university athletes, professional athletes, disabled athletes, geriatric athletes, and the general population who participate in sporting activities for health and fitness.
 In our program, sports medicine residents apply osteopathic principles in the evaluation and treatment of athletic patients while working with athletic trainers, orthopedic surgeons and other providers to create a holistic, comprehensive, and team approach to the management of the patient. An evidence-based approach is used to benefit the athlete patient as well as to promote wellness and provide a supportive rehabilitative environment.
The goal of the Sports Medicine training program at the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (EVVCOM) is to train physicians who are competent to deliver and coordinate the highest quality care for the athletes of all ages and abilities. This program will provide training in the development of the clinical competencies needed to diagnose and manage medical illnesses and injuries related to sports and exercise. Clinical experience will include injury prevention, pre-participation evaluation, return to play criteria, management of acute and chronic illness or injury, and rehabilitation.
The sports medicine residency at EVVCOM will provide the educational experiences necessary for the subspecialty resident to achieve the cognitive knowledge, psychomotor skills, interpersonal skills, professional attitudes, and practical experience required of physicians specialized in the care of athletes. The clinical faculty will provide didactic learning as well as clinical opportunities as integral parts of the required curriculum for this program. The educational and clinical opportunities will be designed to allow the resident to assume progressive responsibility for patient care.
