The Clinical Program - Fellowship Information

AOPTIC/VCOM Research Fellowship

Research fellowships are designed to provide the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to conduct ethical and meaningful studies in todayÕs environment. The Clinical Research Fellowship of the Appalachian Osteopathic Post-Graduate Training Institute Consortium (AOPTIC) is designed to promote clinical research development for osteopathic physicians so that they may pursue these interests and integrate them into their future career. The Clinical Research Fellowship is intended to integrate within residency training of the AOPTIC-affiliated programs; no additional time commitment is required to participate in the program. Time-in-residence requirements at VCOM will be negotiated as electives with the program. See right sidebar for more information.

VCOM Primary Care Sports Fellowship

Primary Care Sports Medicine is a dynamic and rapidly growing subspecialty in the medical profession. The practice of sports medicine is the application of the physicianÕs knowledge, skills, and attitudes to those engaged in sport and exercise. Primary Care Sports Medicine specialists recognize the need for a unique skill set in providing care for athletic patients. Working together with the Sports Medicine Department at Virginia Tech, the goal of our program is to provide the sports medicine resident with the appropriate training to evaluate and optimize the athlete-patientÕs performance while mitigating the effects of acute and chronic disease and injury on health and performance. The sports medicine resident will have the opportunity to interface with a wide variety of sports medicine clinicians at Virginia Tech while delivering care to the student athletes. Additionally, the resident will participate in high school and regional athletic event coverage. Significant teaching experience with athletic trainers, medical students and primary care residents is also available. See right sidebar above for more information.
