The Clinical Research Fellowship is intended to integrate within residency training of the AOPTIC-affiliated programs; no additional time commitment is required to participate in the program. Time-in-residence requirements at VCOM will be negotiated as electives with the program. As part of the two-year AOPTIC Research Fellowship, participants will:
  • Participate in regular teleconference sessions. These sessions allow faculty from across the AOPTIC to provide one-on-one teaching, mentoring, and research collaboration opportunities. At a minimum, coursework will include literature searching and library skills, research methodology, data collection and management, statistics, results reporting, and grant development.
  • Conduct an original data collection clinical research project from inception to presentation.
  • Work one-month in residence at VCOM late in the first year or early in the second year. This time will provide the opportunity to work closely with Dr. Al Pheley on research and statistical issues related to the FellowÕs project.
  • Return to VCOM towards the end of the second fellowship year for a two-week wrap-up. All Fellows in the program will attend this session to present their work, discuss their experiences, and finalize manuscripts for publication.
  • Receive no-cost housing while at VCOM
  • Receive a travel stipend of $200
  • Receive a Fellowship Certificate jointly awarded by VCOM and the AOPTIC upon successful completion of the program requirements.
