A network of hospitals providing postgraduate medical training and opportunities in a number of specialties.
n the first four years, VCOM
initiated the recruitment, academic, research, and outreach programs of the College. In 2007, VCOM set forth the Osteopathic Medical Network of Excellence in Education to complete the College mission through the development and support of post-graduate residency training. OMNEE, a network of hospitals committed to undergraduate and post-graduate academic training, has as its mission the promotion of excellence in osteopathic medical education and research.
The goals of the OMNEE network are to: train osteopathic physicians to meet tomorrow’s health care needs, cultivate research and provide clinical research training, preserve and enhance osteopathic principles and practices, strengthen undergraduate and post-graduate medical education and research through collaboration and shared resources, promote diversity in medicine, and promote the professional values of integrity, duty, compassion, and knowledge.
The College has been an active member of the Appalachian Osteopathic Post-graduate Training Institute and Consortium (AOPTIC) for the past five years. OMNEE will interact with AOPTIC, as both have similar missions and goals. The decision was made to form the new Osteopathic Post Graduate Training Institute (OPTI) in order to be successful in the establishment
of new residency programs in our Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina affiliated hospitals. The residency programs affiliated with VCOM through the OMNEE network will present similar and shared educational programs over the MediaMarshal Internet based "VCOMTV" and share educational programs utilizing the telecommunications system. The OMNEE/VCOM partnership will offer members additional resources including membership in the on-line electronic library, an electronic management and evaluation service and the use of the Center for Medical Education, Simulation, Technology, and Research. Regional meetings of residents and Continuing Medical Education programs will be shared by the OMNEE members.
Two area hospitals are in the process of developing new residency programs under VCOM sponsorship and as members of OMNEE, Montgomery Regional Hospital and Bluefield Regional Medical Center. These hospitals are also members of AOPTIC. VCOM is working with additional hospitals who are interested in providing post-graduate medical training. In addition, VCOM currently sponsors osteopathic residency programs at Riverside Hospital, Carilion Roanoke
Memorial Hospital, and
Shenandoah Valley Hospital.
