On Friday, August 5th from 1 – 2:30p.m., Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine will host its 2nd annual Wizard Mini-Medical School, sponsored by VCOM Library and VCOM’s International and Appalachian Outreach department. This event for Teens, ages 13 – 16 years, is designed to teach and inform youth about medical science and health issues in addition to fostering interest in medical science and inspire youth to pursue a career in medicine. Summer Enrichment Experience will be help at VCOM: July 11-16, 2009 for males (July 11th & the afternoon of July16th are travel days to/from Blacksburg) July 18-23, 2009 for females (July 18th & the afternoon of July 23rd are travel days to/from Blacksburg) With the VCOM mission in mind, the SEE program has been designed to expose high school students in medically underserved areas of Appalachia, to human anatomy and its’ relevance to healthy lifestyles and of medicine. In pursuit of this mission, we are seeking candidates from underserved regions, who are under-represented in health care fields, who have maintained at least an average GPA of 2.75 to participate in a 4-day human anatomy program. |

Osteopathic Students Organize Rugby Match to Benefit Autism Charity
The inaugural A.T. Still Osteopathic Cup will pit the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine against the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine with proceeds to benefit the Center for Autism.
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, USA, and BLACKSBURG, VIRGINIA, USA – March 25, 2010 – Rugby players representing two American schools of osteopathic medicine will square off against each other for the first time ever when students from the Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) Virginia Campus travel to challenge students from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) in the inaugural A. T. Still Osteopathic Cup. The match, which will be held on April 3 at 1 p.m. at PCOM's home match ground in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, will benefit the Center for Autism. More information...

he Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) announced that it will hold its Sixth Annual Via Research Recognition Day on Friday, October 16, 2009. Research Day is a significant event for VCOM and supports the mission of the College to provide medical education and research that prepares globally minded, community-focused physicians and to improve the health of those most in need.
Professor Ferid Murad, M.D., Ph.D. from Houston, TX, who received his Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology in 1998, has agreed to be the Keynote Speaker for the event. Dr. Murad’s research involves on the formation, metabolism and function of nitric oxide as they participate in various cellular signaling processes in the cardiovascular system and making blood vessels dilate. Lieutenant General Ronald R. Blanck, DO, U.S. Army (retired) is a partner and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Martin, Blanck & Associates. The company, formerly Martin & Associates, does health care consulting for the private sector and the government. He retired as the President of the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth June 30, 2006. As president, Dr. Blanck headed an academic health center that includes the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Public Health and School of Health Professions. The Virginia Tech Sports Medicine Association and the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) will be holding a sports medicine clinic for athletic trainers, physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, physicians and any other interested allied health professionals. The goal of our clinic is to provide an opportunity for learning and sharing techniques in managing current issues in athletics. Participants will have the ability to spend time in the state of the art cadaver laboratory at VCOM, where we will be working with prosected cadavers to identify major anatomical structures and injury scenarios that relate to the topics discussed. There will also be lectures and breakout groups that cover evaluation techniques, bracing, and rehabilitation tips. We encourage you to take advantage of this great opportunity to share information with fellow colleagues!
