The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) is located in the Corporate Research Center of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, VA. The medical school although private, is a collaborative partner with Virginia Tech, a relationship that promotes excellence in medical education and research. The mission of VCOM is to prepare primary care physicians who will serve the rural and medically underserved areas of Virginia, North Carolina and the Appalachian region. It is also VCOM’s objective to provide scientific research that will enhance the overall health of all humans and promote health education through community service and outreach.
With the VCOM mission in mind, the SEE program has been designed to expose high school students in medically underserved areas of Appalachia, to human anatomy and its relevance to healthy lifestyles and medicine. In pursuit of this mission, we are seeking candidates from medically underserved regions, as well as those who are under-represented in health care fields. Candidates must have at least an average GPA of 2.75 to participate in the 5 day program. Students should be nominated by his / her teacher, guidance counselor or clergy. The deadline for submission is April 20th.
The program will be held Monday - Thursday (9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) and Friday (9 am - noon) on the VCOM campus (2265 Kraft Dr., Blacksburg, VA. Educational activities will include: interactive lectures, “Anatomy Olympics”, lab activities in our state-of-the-art anatomy lab, cadaver prosections, computer programs, and on-line research and tutorials; all under the direction of our medical students and faculty. The course dates are as follows:
2nd week in July for males (Sunday & ½ of the last day are travel days to/from Blacksburg)
3rd week in July for females (Sunday & ½ of the last day are travel days to/from Blacksburg)
All chaperones must be of the same gender (for lodging purposes) and will bear responsibility for your students (this may include students from other schools/area). Chaperones do not have to spend the day with students in the program and therefore are on their own. Chaperones will be needed for scheduled evening entertainment activities and to ensure safety and accountability of the students.
If selected, VCOM will arrange and pay for 5 nights of lodging for students living more than 45 minutes from Blacksburg at the local Comfort Inn. Sunday is the arrival day and Friday is the day of check-out). Breakfast will be provided Monday – Friday and lunch will be provided Monday - Thursday. Evening entertainment such as movie, putt-putt golf, bowling, skating will be provided. Participants are expected to bring additional spending money for evening meals and souvenirs.
Students will be expected to maintain proper attire (school district dress code). This will be strictly enforced. Many of the program’s activities will take place in the anatomy laboratory. Therefore, open-toed shoes, shorts, hats, low-cut, halter or spaghetti strap tops, mini-skirts, sleeveless shirts, are NOT permitted. Students are advised NOT to use musical devices, cell phones and cameras during the program. Students will be expected to observe departmental policies (to be discussed during orientation) concerning respect to those who have donated their bodies to medical education.
Kindly fill out the attached FORMS for each student recommended and the chaperone form if you are able to attend. All submitted forms will be reviewed by the Department of Anatomy Selection Committee. Notification of selected students will begin May15th.
