On September 23, 2012, Kat LoJacono Werner, sister of VCOM's Matt LoJacono, passed away due to a blood clot.
She was a woman of faith and was a breast cancer survivor, diagnosed in 2006 at the age of 31. Kat made cancer research advocacy her mission, and was trained by some of the best scientific training programs in the country. She was determined to encourage and enhance the dialogue that is just now becoming a standard in all fields of medicine, involving the men and women at the laboratory bench, at the bedside of patients, in the halls of Congress, and also the voices of the patients themselves. She believed that by working together together, this dialogue can change the future for her kids’ generation.
Kat had leadership influence in many circles in the New River Valley, from leading her daughter’s Girl Scout Troop, to breast cancer awareness research, to serving in her church in Christiansburg.
In Kat’s honor, VCOM will be collecting donations for the family -- her husband and four young children. The plan is to help provide a housekeeping service or other needs for the family to help them during this difficult time.
