VCOM wishes to announce the establishment of the Empress-Janeen Hughes Memorial Scholarship for Pediatrics.
The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine was saddened to learn of the tragic death of Empress-Janeen Hughes, D.O. from injuries sustained from an automobile accident on December 12, 2011 while in route to The Children’s Hospital, Department of Pediatrics at Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Georgia. Dr. Hughes was a first year resident who graduated from VCOM in 2011.
Jan Willcox, D.O., Vice Dean at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine - Virginia Campus, stated, “We all picture her beautiful, radiant smile when we think of Empress. She was a leader, always ready to help out in any way, and fully committed to the care of children in need. Among her many activities, she served as a student ambassador, President of the Pediatrics Club and she was actively involved in medical missions at VCOM.”
The Empress-Janeen Hughes Memorial Scholarship for Pediatrics will be awarded to a VCOM fourth year student entering Pediatrics to be utilized for travel expenses incurred in seeking residency.
