Providing Medical Care, Compassion, and Support for the Earthquake Victims
On January 31 - February 7, 35 VCOM students, faculty and volunteers will be traveling to Jimani, Dominican Republic, a hospital on the border with Haiti, to provide medical care to evacuated Haitians. The images displayed on this website were taken by a doctor and his son who worked at the Jimani hospital last week and who were very helpful with our VCOM trip arrangements. The pictures show the hospital area where the team will be working and the great need for medical care.
Over 3,000 patients arrived last week at Jimani; some carried, others brought by pickups, cars, and the most serious by Black Hawk helicopters provided by the U.S. military. The needs are dire for immediate treatment by medical personnel including dressing wounds and general care that our team can help provide. We will also provide relief for the doctors who have been working 18 hours per day in difficult surgeries, numerous amputations and medical care.
We have contacted and gained approvals from the Dominican Ministry of Health (SESPAS), PAHO/WHO, USAID, UN and UNDP for the VCOM trip to Jimani, Dominican Republic.
We are saddened by the loss of life and conditions in Haiti following the earthquake and extend our prayers and concerns to the Haitian community. In particular, our support is extended to two VCOM students who have family in Haiti. |
