This flu season, the VCOM – Carolinas Campus continued its efforts to reduce the number of flu victims in the surrounding counties. VCOM partnered with a local non-profit organization, The Carpenter's Table, a food and clothing distribution center. The faculty present were Petra Warren, M.D., Chair of Underserved and Rural Medicine, Stuart Williams, D.O., Chair of OMM, and Ty Robinson, D.O., F.A.C.O.G., Chair of Ob/Gybn. The students involved were Jordana Ruffner, Mario Cisneros, Elizabeth Montague, Mike Farwell, and Jason Anderon, along with staff members April Cantrell, Administrative Assistant of Clinical Affairs, and Vicki Fisgus, Executive Administrative Assistant to the Vice Dean. On Saturday, December 3, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., the faculty, students and staff met in Moore, South Carolina. They administered flu shots followed by an osteopathic manipulative medicine treatment that has been shown to improve the vaccine's effectiveness. The theme for the event was that no one can do everything, but everyone can do something. The campus hopes to increase awareness and encourage other agencies to provide community service to the underserved by leading as an example.
