The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine—Carolinas Campus is excited to announce that Student Doctor Anne Garces, Class of 2015, has been selected for the competitive 2011 Sherry R. Arnstein Minority Student Scholarship.
Anne was chosen among competitive applicants nationwide for her innovative and action-oriented proposal to encourage and increase minority student enrollment at colleges of osteopathic medicine. Anne’s personal appeal to the osteopathic medical profession was ignited by an incredible shadowing experience she had with Dr. Melinda Walker, DO. The holistic, personal approach to treatment and wellness spoke to the desires Student Doctor Garces looks to facilitate with patients when she enters practice. Anne commented , “I knew that this humanistic approach to medical science fulfilled my passion to significantly better the lives of my community.” Within Anne’s scholarship application, she also spoke of multiple ways to increase the visibility of osteopathic medicine to those who are from underrepresented minority groups.
Dr. Timothy J. Kowalski, Vice Dean of Academic Affairs at the VCOM-Carolinas Campus, was pleased to hear of Student Doctor Garces’s selection. “Student Doctor Garces embodies embodies the qualities of the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine and the spirit of the osteopathic profession. With her committed dedication, she will be a great role model and mentor for aspiring minority applicants to schools of osteopathic medicine. We are so pleased to hear that Ann was the recipient for the national Sherry R. Arnstein award”
