On November 22, 2011, VCOM-Carolinas Campus partnered with a local non-profit organization, Church Builders, to provide free flu vaccines to underserved Spartanburg County residents. Following the vaccinations, an OMM Treatment that has been shown to improve effectiveness of the vaccine was provided. Twelve students, two faculty and three staff members volunteered for this outreach project under the leadership of Petra Warren, M.D., Chair of Underserved and Rural Medicine for the Carolinas Campus. The vaccines were donated by South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control. First year student Meg Kanoy stated “It’s about us reaching out to the community and making our presence known and making a difference at home before we make a difference anywhere else.” VCOM-Carolinas Campus has partnered with other local non-profit organizations to provide similar events in the near future.
