Since the opening of Academic Primary Care Associates (APCA) in 2008, the VCOM community practice, which also serves as a teaching site for medical students and residents, has grown in the number of physicians and patients. A cohort of eleven (11) family medicine residents, two pediatricians, and an additional family medicine physician have been added to the practice since its opening two years ago. APCA opened with eight physicians.
APCA has served the community by offering primary care to patients in the New River Valley for over two years. Additionally, APCA is an excellent training site for VCOM medical students and family medicine residents since the practice includes a significant scope and volume of patient cases and the use of osteopathic manipulative medicine is incorporated into the treatment of patients.
Due to expansion and growing numbers of patients at APCA, exam room space became limited. The new Academic Sports and Osteopathic Medicine (ASOM) practice currently has six exam rooms and a welcoming and inviting medical space for patients. While APCA will continue to see primary care patients, those seeking physician services at ASOM will primarily seek treatment for sports and other musculoskeletal issues. Physicians at APCA and ASOM will continue to work in conjunction with each other and VCOM students will train in both sites.
