The VCOM-Virginia Campus chapter of the Hispanic Community Medical Outreach Organization (HCMO) held a health fair in Elmwood Park in Roanoke Virginia in conjunction with the Latino Festival, which is organized by Avancemos Roanoke as well as Local Colors. The group of VCOM volunteers began seeing patients at about 12 p.m. Two VCOM Post-baccalaureate program students and seven second year osteopathic medical students participated in the care of over 70 patients.
Six stations including three Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) stations; BMI measurements; blood glucose screenings; and blood pressure checks. Dr. Sofia Abraham-Hardee, (VCOM Class of 2008) and Dr. Anne Shaw-Collins (VCOM Class of 2008), new VCOM faculty members, as well as Dr. Abraham Hardee, also a 2007 VCOM alumni, precepted the students and cared for the patients.
The precepting physicians assisted students in diagnosing as well as treating patients with OMM. According to Monica Ruiz, second year medical student and president of the VCOM HCMO, “It was a great opportunity for medical students to apply their knowledge as well as their OMM skills. I believe we also increased awareness about Osteopathic medicine. All in all, the day turned out great!”
