September 22, 2010 -- The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) – Carolinas Campus accepted its first group of students for the inaugural class on Friday, September 17, 2010. Classes begin August, 2011 on a new campus currently being constructed in Spartanburg on the old Spartan Mill site.
“I am so happy that we have started the interview process and are giving students the opportunity to attend medical school in upstate South Carolina. It was so exciting to be able to make telephone calls to the students the admission committee decided to accept and let them know they will be starting medical school here at VCOM next Fall,” stated Mattie Bendall, Director of Admissions.
VCOM-Carolinas Campus began interviewing candidates last week and will continue to interview and accept applicants through March, 2011 according to its rolling admissions based admission process.
The first group of applicants who interviewed had a special greeting from VCOM President Jim Wolfe, Ph.D. and Dean and Executive Vice President, Dixie Tooke-Rawlins, D.O. The candidates were then interviewed by VCOM faculty members and presented information about the new campus.
Amy Bruce, a graduate of Wofford College and resident of Spartanburg County, was among the first to be accepted. Dr. Tooke Rawlins, who had the opportunity to meet Amy on interview day, expressed her excitement that Amy was one of the first students accepted, “Amy is a delightful person and I am pleased that she will be joining the VCOM family this fall. From speaking with her about her goals and impressive background I am confident she will be an asset to our inaugural class and to her future patients.”
When asked about her acceptance, Ms. Bruce commented, “I am very excited to accept my invitation to join the inaugural class at VCOM-Carolinas Campus. I’m impressed at how everyone at VCOM is so sincere and willing to go out of their way to help. Becoming a physician
and serving my community have been a life-long goal of mine, and there’s no better place to accomplish my dream. I am thrilled to become a part of the VCOM family,”
VCOM-Carolinas Campus has a collaborative partnership with Wofford College. The institutions will work together to enrich the student experience on both campuses and VCOM students will have access to the facilities and resources on Wofford’s campus. Dr. Benjamin Dunlap, President of Wofford College was pleased to hear of Amy’s acceptance and commented about the relationship between the two schools, “I’m delighted that our new relationship with VCOM has extended the options open to our pre-med students, both before they graduate from Wofford and in pursuit of their medical degrees.”
