The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine—Virginia Campus (VCOM) and the local chapter of the AARP teamed up to sponsor a Health Fair on the VCOM campus in Blacksburg. More than 350 persons attended the free Health and Wellness Fair.
Participants took advantage of free seminars, exhibits, and health screenings that included blood pressure, bone density, hearing tests, vision tests, blood sugar tests, body mass evaluations and more. Osteopathic manipulative medicine treatments were also offered by VCOM faculty and students and through the VCOM Office of Geriatrics, which sponsors a geriatrics fellowship, VCOM physicians answered participants questions.
Seminars were offered on “Understanding the Difference Between Normal Forgetfulness and Dementia” and “Drug Interactions Between Certain Prescription Drugs and over the Counter Drugs.” Many participants brought their prescriptions and took advantage of the free consultation based on their medications.
There were over 70 exhibits and light refreshments for participants. According to Vice Dean, Dr. Jan Willcox, “Our students always do a great job at programs which provide education and healthcare to the community and this program was no exception – our students were tremendous and engaged with the hundreds of people who attended this fair. It was a privilege to have the opportunity to team up with the local chapter of the AARP. Faculty and students alike enjoyed working with them.”
