VCOM is proud to announce that Class of 2014 Student Doctor Benjamin Stacy has been chosen for the Paul Ambrose Scholars Program for 2011. Each year, the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR) chooses 45 medical students, amongst thousands of applicants nationally, to attend a 3 day leadership symposium and conduct a funded community-based health education project. During this leadership symposium (June 23rd-26th) Ben will be exposed to a variety of leaders and differing perspectives in public health care and is excited about participating, as Student Doctor Stacy expressed, “The prospect of empowering individuals in our community with the knowledge of prevention education will allow for success in our future as physicians”
The Ambrose Scholars are chosen based on their proposal of a community health project. For his application, Ben created a proposal to initiate a research and prevention project focused on mental health and its relationship to cardiovascular health.
This marks the 7th time, since its inception in 2002, in which a VCOM student has been selected for this elite program. Previous VCOM selections include Cara Riley (Class of ’08), Samuel Deel (’07), John Casey (’08), John Daniel (’08), Keith Proctor (’07), and Caleb Mentzer (’11).
According to Dr. Jim Wolfe, VCOM’s President, “Student Doctor Stacy is an exceptional choice for this award. We are pleased that another VCOM student is participating in this program. As an osteopathic medical school, our philosophy in the practice of medicine lends itself to students pursuing further leadership education in public health and Student Doctor Stacy will be an excellent representative for VCOM and the profession.”
