Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) hosted an annual American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) meeting on January 17 held at VCOM II.
A luncheon was held for the members before Dr. Susan Meacham gave a well received talk entitled “Food and Dietary Supplements for Cancer Patients” about diet and health effects on cancer treatments.
Diane J. Sutphin, Director of Alumni and Development, said the meeting and speech was well received by all in attendance.
“Our numbers were very high this year for attendance,” Sutphin said. “We had around 85 people come to both the luncheon and meeting, which shows the overall success of the AARP chapter and VCOM partnership.”
This is the third year VCOM has hosted the January AARP meeting.
VCOM and AARP have begun planning for the second bi-annual health fair to be held on September 19.
“The health fair’s goal is to educate members of the community on the importance of being aware of what it takes to be and remain healthy,” Sutphin said.
The health fair serves as a tool for the local community to live better, healthier lives. It is also a chance to showcase VCOM and share new research and findings of the students.
“There will be free health screenings available, flu shots, as well as muscular skeletal screenings for the local community,” Sutphin said.
Over 100 exhibitors from the New River Valley will be present at the fair to showcase health related issues and programs of interest to all attendees.
AARP will donate half of the proceeds from the health fair toward a scholarship to VCOM students interested in gerontology.
“The fair is a great way to bring the New River Valley community and the VCOM community together,” Sutphin said. “It shows that we want to make sure individuals know what they can do to stay healthy, and that we want to help them in any way possible.”
More information about exhibitions and exhibitor registration will be announced.
