This fall, the VCOM Sports Medicine Club held the 3rd Annual Big Bernardo Bowling Classic and VCOM students “abided” in the form of 12 teams. Indeed, 48 creatively clad bowlers, with a truly shocking range of ability, took to the lanes to roll for The Bernardo Scholarship and the newly commissioned “Goldish Globe Trophy”. Prizes for top individual score, top team score, best team trick shot and best team costume/spirited name were awarded in the form of the most prized of all medical school currencies: caffeine. Starbucks gift cards rewarded the winning efforts, as these teams took their place in the Pantheon of VCOM Bowling Greats. Most importantly, the Big Bernardo raised $1,200 for a scholarship in the enduring memory of Mike Bernardo, a VCOM student whose bright light was extinguished far too early. Raised funds support the cost of 3rd and 4th VCOM students rotating in underserved clinical areas abroad.
