VCOM Summer Enrichment Experience (SEE)

The SEE program has been designed to expose high school students in medically underserved areas of Appalachia, to human anatomy and its’  relevance to healthy lifestyles and of medicine. We are seeking candidates from underserved regions, who are under-represented in health care fields, who have maintained at least an average GPA of 2.75 to participate in a 4-day human anatomy program. Students should be nominated by his / her teacher, guidance counselor or clergy. The deadline for submission is April 25th. For NOMINATION & CONSENT FORMS click here.

The program will be Monday - Thursday (9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.). Educational activities will include: interactive lectures, “Flash Card Olympics”, lab activities in our state-of-the-art anatomy lab, cadaver prosections, computer programs, and on-line tutorials; all under the direction of our anatomy faculty and medical students. The course dates are as follows:

July 06-11, 2008 for males  (July 6th & July 11th are travel days to/from Blacksburg)

July 13-18, 2008 for females  (July 13th & July 18th are travel days to/from Blacksburg)




ANNOUNCEMENT

2nd Virginia IRB Consortium

The 2nd Virginia Institutional Review Board (IRB) Consortium will be held at the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) on April 25, 2008, providing regional networking amongst IRB members as well as up-to-date educational opportunities.

Topics of discussion will include the following challenges for IRBs:

  • New Federal Regulations for Human Subject Protection
  • International Research
  • Ethical Quandaries with Social and Behavioral Science Research
  • When Things Go Wrong in Gene Therapy Research
  • Clinical Research Perils and Pitfalls

This half-day event will be open to all IRB members and administrators, as well as physicians, faculty and staff involved in Human Subjects Research. The event will be followed by a banquet and update on institutional research.

Registration: 11:30am; followed by, Lunch, Lectures and Banquet

  • Advanced Registration on or before March 1, 2008:
    $50.00 + optional $30 for Banquet
  • After March 1, the registration fees will be $60.00 + $40 for optional Banquet
  • The registration fee (includes lunch) for Faculty and IRB members of Virginia Tech and VCOM has been assured by the institutions. However, advanced registration is required. Participants will arrange to pay for the Banquet charges.

It is anticipated that the CME Organizations (AOA CCME and AMA PRA) will designate this educational activity for a maximum of 4.0 Category 1A/PRA Category 1 credits.
