Family Medicine Residencies focus on educating physicians to assist patient to find the road to improved health. Medical students should seek Family Medicine Residency programs that train their residents to become compassionate, clinically skilled physicians who work effectively as a part of a primary care team. Medical students should schedule electives with their residencies of choice in the fourth year to narrow the number of sites for the residency match.
The Medical Home model is the environment of choice in which to train. In this environment or in any residency environment, family medicine residencies should offer residents experience in management and leadership of the medical home. Family Medicine residents must learn to care for patients of all ages. To be financially successful in a practice, family medicine residents must learn a host of ambulatory procedures. Opportunities must exist to enhance OMM skills as up to 60% of conditions patients present with in primary care have a musculoskeletal component.
Family Medicine residencies may be followed with fellowships in areas such as sports medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, public and community health, preventive medicine, geriatrics, aesthetic medicine, occupational medicine, health policy, and osteopathic manipulative medicine.
In looking for a residency seek a residency that holds similar values to your own, offers a wide variety of training and is prepared for the next generation of practice allowing the physician to prepare for a leadership role in quality improvement, informatics, and an interdisciplinary practice.
