Darlene Myles, D.O.

ABOUT DR. MYLES: Darlene Myles was born and raised in Long Island, NY. She pursued undergraduate studies at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY graduating in 1983 with a B.S. Myles then went to Hofstra University and obtained an M.A. in biology in 1985. Following Residency, she joined the Navy. Dr. Myles was active duty from 1994-1999 and was stationed at Portsmouth Naval Hospital as faculty in the Emergency Medicine Residency. At that time she was active with the chemical, biological anti-terrorism unit. She was then transferred to Jacksonville Naval Air Station, where she worked in the emergency department and was associate faculty for family medicine. Dr. Myles was in the Naval Reserve until 2005 and obtained the rank of commander, at which time she received an honorable discharge. In 2000, Dr. Myles went to work for the University of Florida as Clinical Assistant Faculty of Emergency Medicine at Orange Park Medical Center. She always worked at other emergency departments during her naval career and while at Orange Park to expand her medical experience. In November of 2011, she accepted a job at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in the Emergency Department. Dr. Myles continues to work at this level one trauma center, where she serves on the Hospital Emergency Response Team (HERT) and Quality Assurance Committee. Dr. Myles precepts medical students, interns and residents, and holds multiple faculty positions at various medical schools. MORE INFORMATION ABOUT DR. MYLES. |

ABOUT DR. POWERS: Jim Powers was raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia and pursued his undergraduate studies at Virginia Tech from 1988-1992, graduating with a B.S. in Finance. While at Virginia Tech, he earned his Emergency Medical Technician Certification and volunteered with the Virginia Tech Volunteer Rescue Squad. Following graduation Powers returned to Virginia Beach and attended Old Dominion University to complete required premedical classes. During this time he also obtained his Paramedic Certification and worked as a paramedic with the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad and as a Tactical Paramedic with the Virginia Beach Police Department SWAT Team. From 1996-1998, Powers worked as full time Instructor of Emergency Medical Science at Tidewater Community College where he taught a variety of courses including a paramedic program, introduction to EKG’s, pathophysiology, ACLS, PALS and BTLS. In addition he had the privilege of teaching members of the military special operations including SEAL Team, Army Rangers, Pararescue and Dive team members in an accelerated paramedic program. Powers attended medical school at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine – Midwestern University from 1998-2002 and graduated Class Valedictorian. Following medical school, he pursued an Emergency Medicine Residency training at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA from 2002-2005. During his 3rd year he was honored as the first D.O. to be appointed “Chief Resident” of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program. Following residency, Powers moved to Blacksburg and worked as an attending physician in the Emergency Department at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. At CNRVMC he assumed an active role as a preceptor for third year medical students rotating through the Emergency Department. Since November 2007, he has served as the Emergency Medicine Department Associate Chair and moved his clinical practice to the Emergency Department at Montgomery Regional Hospital. Powers stated, "The Emergency Medicine Department at VCOM has proved a very exciting place to work! We are currently working on several exciting projects including developing an Emergency Medicine Residency Program, a state of the art Simulation Center and an advanced ultrasound training program." |
