VCOM - Virginia Campus
The main campus building in Blacksburg, Virginia, is approximately 60,000 square feet and is situated on a 13-acre campus. There are two parking areas: a student area and a faculty/staff area. Handicapped and visitor parking is available in spaces along the front and side of the building. VCOM’s information systems, provided through Virginia Tech, provide our campus community with access to information systems and resources worldwide. The classroom environment affords optimum learning conditions while demonstrating respect for both students and faculty alike. In addition to two theatre classrooms which seat 190 each, 10 moderately sized rooms are available for small group learning. Clinical skills laboratories are interconnected using modern video, computer technology, and net meeting technologies. VCOM also has 21,000 square foot of research laboratory space that houses seven biomedical research laboratories.
The Simulation and Technology Center
In June 2008, VCOM opened The Simulation and Technology Center, a 21,000 square foot educational technologies center. The Center houses cutting-edge high fidelity human medical simulators, standardized patient examination rooms, simulated surgical and intensive care unit suites, physical diagnosis and osteopathic manual therapy training labs, a simulated anatomy lab and radiology suite, and room for additional medical education programs. This facility represents the latest in medical simulation and learning technology.
The Center contains six large rooms that house the clinical skills labs for physical diagnosis as well as osteopathic manual therapy. For the purpose of competency-based clinical skills testing, the labs can be converted easily into twelve simulated patient examination rooms, where actors, trained to simulate medical conditions, are used as simulated patients. Students are recorded for competency in communication skills, physical diagnosis, and technical skill performance. Two surgery suites with surgery and anesthesia training capabilities, a pediatric suite, a geriatric suite, an intensive care suite, a two-bay room equipped for emergent procedures and resuscitation, an obstetrical room, and virtual radiology suites are also included in this space. In addition, the Center will house an anatomy lab of permanently preserved (plastinated) cadavers.
The Center provides numerous benefits to students and instructors. The early merging of simulation medicine into the curriculum presents students with challenging and realistic patient care scenarios, which provides consistency in the training and testing required for competency.
VCOM Institute for Biomechanical and Sports Medicine Research
In the summer of 2009, VCOM opened its newest building, VCOM II, that houses the VCOM Institute for Biomechanical and Sports Medicine Research. This building has cutting-edge biomechanical research programs and accommodates a sophisticated deceleration sled that is used for the study of impact injury biomechanics and the prevention of such injuries. The building also contains an 11,000 square foot conference center.
VCOM Library
The library is located on the second floor of the main campus building. It is a state-of-the-art electronic medical resource center serving the faculty, staff and students of the College. The VCOM library is hosted by VTLS Library Systems, an internationally known library and museum electronic host, and can be accessed from each students’ home as well as from the clinical sites. The VTLS portal allows high speed access to the most current evidence based literature and educational resources currently available online.
Medical students also have access on campus to the Virginia Tech Libraries which includes the main library, Carol M. Newman Library, and the Veterinary Medicine Library. The Newman Library, a member of the Association of Research Libraries, is a large research library housing two million bound volumes, six million microforms, 8,870 videos and films, 8,640 cassettes and recordings and 131,472 maps. A special collections department houses major research and archival collections. Items in the collections may be located by visiting the library and using the online catalog.

VCOM - Carolinas Campus
On February 25, 2010, the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine broke ground for its branch campus in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Several hundred civic leaders, government officials, and members of the community gathered at the ceremony to join VCOM administration and faculty near the historic smokestack at the old Spartan Mills site. The campus, opening in the fall of 2011, will offer all four years of osteopathic medical education to 150 medical students per year, totaling to a four-year student body of 600 students.
The main campus building is approximately 70,000 square feet and is situated on a 18-acre campus. Ample parking exists for all VCOM students and faculty. Handicapped and visitor parking is available. VCOM’s information systems, provided through Virginia Tech, provide our campus community with access to information systems and resources worldwide. The classroom environment affords optimum learning conditions while demonstrating respect for both students and faculty alike. In addition to two theatre classrooms which seat 160 each, 20 moderately sized rooms are available for small group learning. Clinical skills laboratories are interconnected using modern video, computer technology, and net meeting technologies. The main campus building includes a state-of-the-art anatomy lab, a center for technology and simulated medicine, a full library, and dining facility.
The 18-acre campus includes a walking and biking path, a small lake, and outside patios providing students with both indoor and outdoor environments for study and activities. The Wofford College campus and downtown Spartanburg are in close proximity to the VCOM campus.
