In Spring of your third year, the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs (or in some cases the Assistant Dean for the Region) will be available to meet with the student upon the student’s request a meeting on to possible career choices. Students may choose to discuss a career with a Department Chair as well.
In the fall of your fourth year students apply to a traditional internship or to a residency. Students are provided assistance with the ERAS process through the Office of the Registrar and residency match program through the Vice President of Student Services and OMNEE. Students who choose a clinical career should complete a residency upon graduation and take / pass a board certification for the field in which he or she practices. All students must enter the match process for residency placement. Each year VCOM holds a day where residency programs are hosted from around the country and each provide a display to show the residencies / career opportunities that exist for students. Although there is not a career placement process in medicine, there is a shortage in the workforce currently and medical career opportunities abound. The career options for residency within OMNEE are provided on-line.
VCOM students have a history of 100% placement through the match for those students who complete all graduation requirements including all COMLEX exams, and who enter the match within the designated timeframe. In addition, VCOM students have entered residency positions in the majority of medical fields and in some of the most prestigious residencies in the country. Residency programs are often competitive and students are therefore judged by the residency programs based upon their GPA, the COMLEX performance, and how the student performed on an audition rotation. In general, greater than 90% of VCOM students are placed in the first round of the AOA NMS, Military Match, or ACGME NRMP match. The few who did not place in the initial round of the match process participate in a scramble and historically (2005-2010) 98% have placed in a residency program in the scramble. The remaining 2% of graduates who have graduated off cycle were placed individually outside the match. Faculty are available to the students throughout the four years, especially Chairs, to discuss possible career options.
