EXPERTISE:
Embryology, Human Gross Anatomy, Histology
ABOUT DR. ANSTROM:
Dr. Anstrom obtained his Ph.D. in Anatomy from the State University of New York/Buffalo and served as a postdoctoral associate in the biology department at Indiana University in the laboratory of Dr. Rudolf A. Raff. His early research utilized sea urchin embryos to study the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate the normal progression of embryonic development. Dr. Anstrom then moved to a faculty position at Wake Forest University School of Medicine where he continued his research program and also taught in several medical courses including gross human anatomy, histology, and embryology. While at Wake Forest, Dr. Anstrom became involved in a long-standing and successful research program established by neuroradiologist Dr. Dixon Moody. This collaboration resulted in several articles that explained how the clinically-observed high incidence of intracerebral bleeding in neonates born prematurely was linked to the incomplete structural development of cerebral vessels. After twenty two years at Wake Forest, Dr. Anstrom accepted his current position at VCOM.

ABOUT DR. PAULMAN:
Born and raised in Western Nebraska—never want to see a cornfield again as long as I live. (Or a cow!) [Unless I am eating them—preferably well done.]
Graduated High School in 1978, and then worked in farming and industrial maintenance until 1984 when I matriculated to the University of Maryland College Park 84-85. I then transferred to University of South Carolina in fall 1985 and graduated with a B.S. in biology December 1989. Married December 1990, to Joanna Mary Wainwright; we have one son, Wesley Michael, born January 1994-(a born musician—but never have a child learn to play the sax in your living room.) I ran the research lab of Marcia Welsh, Ph.D. for 3 years before entering graduate school. Received my Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from University of South Carolina, School of Medicine in 1998; specialization in neurodevelopmental cell-extracellular matrix interactions.
Accepted faculty position at USC School of Medicine July 1998, Instructor and Laboratory Director for Gross Anatomy and Embryology; promoted to assistant and then associate professor with responsibility for running gross anatomy / embryology courses for medical, graduate and undergraduate students/Director of Gift of Body Program at USC SOM 1999
