Clinical Faculty Participation:

Potential Faculty Members

Thank you for your interest in becoming faculty for the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM).

VCOM has four categories of faculty.

  1. On campus-full time faculty who are members of a Clinical or Biomedical Department (discipline) who provide teaching, service and research forty hours or greater per week (1 FTE) and who receive all salary and benefits from the College.
  2. Non-Clinical track, on campus-part time faculty who provide teaching, research, and/or service but who have less than a 40 hour per week commitment (<1FTE), and/or are paid by more than one source for the teaching time.
  3. Clinical Track faculty are contracted, paid, part-time faculty, who are credentialed and a member of a VCOM clinical department. This group of faculty teach on a routine basis for the College, primarily in the clinical setting (precepting); may or may not teach on campus; and receive salary from other sources for their clinical practice. Additional relationships may exist within this category.
  4. Adjunct faculty are non-contracted faculty, who may or may not be paid, whose teaching is not available on a routine basis and is episodic. Those wishing to become faculty should send a letter or email to the appropriate Associate Dean (Clinical or Biomedical) describing their desire to participate in the teaching, research, and/or service to the College, the desired position, and the desired number of hours to work for the College. Openings are listed in the human resources section of the website. The Associate Dean will respond to the contact information listed. Email is preferred mode of initial communication.

Physician Faculty within the Clinical Core sites seeking employment.

Core site Clinical faculty are paid for providing required rotations. Once a faculty appointment is made, Clinical faculty will receive a contract describing the monthly stipend and benefits for Clinical Faculty. The staff of the office for Clinical Affairs and for Research will provide support to clinical faculty of the region. Support will include assistance with educational lectures, CME, assistance with research filed through the College, and access to the electronic library. The College has approval as a sponsor for CME.

Each hospital Core clinical training site has a Director of Student Medical Education who oversees the clinical programs within the site. The DSME reports to the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs at VCOM, in order to maintain continuity of curriculums at all training regions. Both the DME and the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs will assure a quality clinical training program occurs at the institution and will oversee students in the region. The Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs is Jan Willcox, D.O. (phone 540-231-4927, e-mail jwillcox@vcom.vt.edu). VCOM hires a Clinical Site Coordinator for each Core regional site who reports through the Director of Clinical Rotations, Kelli Bumpus, email kbumpus@vcom.vt.edu. The Clinical Site Coordinator is housed at the regional site and serves as a primary liaison to the campus.

Clinical faculty for VCOM are paid to perform classroom or on-line teaching, provide training in the clinical site, and to perform research. We recognize that each faculty member has different skills and all faculty are not interested in research or classroom teaching. Please indicate your areas of interest and willingness as faculty on the faculty application form.

Once you have completed the application and submitted a recent CV and a photocopy of your Medical License, Medical School Diploma and Board Certication, your materials will be reviewed by the DSME, Department Chair, and Administration. If an appointment is to be offered, your application and CV will be processed through the Appointment, Promotion and Tenure Committee. Following the award of a faculty position, a contract may be offered, reflecting the level of participation.

Each faculty member is required to attend one (1) curriculum planning retreat annually (full-day) and to attend a minimum of two (2) clinical department meetings per year and (1) faculty development session per year. These are often given on the same day and may occur at the clinical sites. Some of these may be attended by video conferencing.

If you are interested in being faculty for VCOM, please go to: www.vcom.vt.edu/admin/ClinicalFaculty.doc and complete a CV and forward it to me. All forms must be completed before a faculty rank can be awarded.

Sincerely,
Jan M. Willcox, D.O.
