In August 2011, VCOM admitted its ninth class on the Virginia Campus and the Inaugual class on the Carolinas Campus.

These classes adopted their mottos:

VCOM- Virginia Campus

Transcending boundaries,
serving communities,
building unity.

Empowering local and global communities by fulfilling our duty to enrich the future through patient-focused care and education.

VCOM-Carolinas Campus

Building traditions
Together we stand;
Mind to body
Spirit to hand

Pioneering a culture of learning and healing
through dedicated service and health education,
as we foster a legacy of compassionate care
in our class, our community, and our world.

VCOM actively recruits a diverse student body to meet the health care needs of a multicultural society and the mission of the College. VCOM has focused on recruitment of students from the Appalachian region and from other rural areas with special emphasis on attracting minority and mission-minded candidates.

Recruitment

VCOM has focused recruitment efforts in four major areas:

Appalachia

VCOM recruits students from southern Appalachian states and particularly the rural areas of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Students from the three target states in the Appalachian Region have a priority for recruitment, which includes reviewing and admitting these applicants as a first priority.

Rural

In addition, VCOM has a commitment to recruiting additional students from all rural areas. It is VCOM’s commitment to meet the physician shortage in rural areas throughout the United States.

Minority

VCOM recognizes the lack of medical care to minority populations. VCOM actively recruits minority students who are underrepresented in health care. The population of the United States is becoming increasingly diverse. VCOM seeks a student body that will ultimately meet the needs of a diverse society.

Mission-Minded

VCOM is committed to producing physicians to meet society's health care needs. VCOM seeks students who are compassionate, knowledgeable, and committed to quality health care for all.  The Appalachian outreach and International outreach programs, in which all students have the opportunity to participate, were developed to assist students in developing the skills needed to provide compassionate and altruistic care whether for a rural area, a medically underserved population in an urban area, or in a developing country. VCOM seeks students who share this personal mission and commitment to those who are medically underserved.
