President
Dr. Wolfe has a long career in academics as a Professor Emeritus in Chemistry at Virginia Tech, previously serving as Chemistry faculty for many years, Chemistry Department Chair for nine years, Vice Provost of Virginia Tech for more than five years, and as the Co-Director of the Harvey Peter’s Research Center. His administrative and educational experiences, his accomplishments in research, and his knowledge of Virginia Tech made him a natural choice for the position.
Executive Vice President and Dean
The Dean was chosen for her experience in osteopathic medical education and in rural health. Dr. Rawlins has over 18 years experience in medical education and has served as the Dean for VCOM since the initial planning stages in 2001. Dr. Rawlins earned her degree from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine; Missouri, is board certified in family practice through ABOFP and is employed full time by VCOM.
Dr. Rawlins has many years in medical education and educational administration; she began teaching in 1990 at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in family medicine and was the course director for emergency medicine. Dr. Rawlins was awarded board certification in both fields. In 1994 Dr. Rawlins began serving as a family practice residency director in Michigan. Two years later Dr. Rawlins moved to Pennsylvania and established an osteopathic family practice residency at St. Luke’s Hospital where, for several years, she served as both residency director and osteopathic Director of Medical Education. In 1998 Dr. Rawlins was recruited to become the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs for the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri, serving in that position for two years and as the Interim Dean and Vice President for one year. Dr. Rawlins, as the founding Dean for VCOM, led the College in the development of the curriculum, clinical site affiliations, budget and long range plan, and assisted in the design of the first educational and research facilities.
Associate Dean for Clinical Research
Dr. Brolinson began his tenure as the Associate Dean, Clinical Research in July 2007. Previously Dr. Brolinson was the Associate Professor/Discipline Chair of Sports Medicine. Dr. Brolinson is the Head Team Physician for Virginia Tech Athletics and is the Director of the Osteopathic Family Practice Residency Training Program at Carilion Health System. He is also the Team Physician for the U.S. Ski Team. Dr. Brolinson is active in clinical research, completing a Post Doctoral Clinical Research Fellowship at VCOM. And, he is currently the PI for two studies: 1) a one year study of Orthotics and dynamic stability through January 2008, and 2) a five year study of Biomedical basis of mild traumatic brain injury through April 2012.
Associate Vice President for Finance, Chief Financial Affairs
Mr. Hamric is the Associate Vice President for Finance, Chief Financial Affairs. Mr. Hamric began as VCOM’s CFO in April 2007. He has had over 20 years of experience in higher education and financial management.
Associate Dean of the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-med Program
In the fall of 2011, Dr. Hill began his position leading the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Med Program. He began his tenure at VCOM as the Associate Dean, Biomedical Academic Affairs in July 2007. Most recently, Dr. Hill was the Associate Dean for Medical Education. He has many years of experience in teaching histology and embryology at an undergraduate level. Dr. Hill’s research interests are in medical education.
Associate Vice President for Student Services and Media Relations
Mr. King is the Associate Vice President, Student Services and has served in this position for over nine years. Mr. King has significant experience in both student services and in overseeing a postgraduate trainee program. Mr. King has in the past served as a Director of Admissions for a four year college, Vice President and Director of AACOMAS and was instrumental in the initial development of the AACOMAS computer processing system, and most recently (prior to coming to VCOM in January of 2003) served as the Director of UMDNJ OPTI. Mr. King has over 25 years of higher education experience.
Associate Dean for Biomedical Division and Research
Dr. Mahaney is the Associate Dean for Biomedical Division and Research, serving in this position since December 2008. Dr. Mahaney teaches Biochemistry for the first year medical students and maintains an active research program in cardiovascular biochemistry. Dr. Mahaney started his independent research career in 1994 at the West Virginia University School of Medicine, and has been at VCOM since 2003.
Associate Vice President for Research
Dr. Misra is the Associate Vice President for Research and has served in this position for seven years. Dr. Misra has extensive experience in education and research. He is a Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and served as the Division Chair of Biomedical Sciences at the Veterinary College at Virginia Tech. Dr. Misra is known nationally and internationally for his research and has over 23 years of higher education teaching and administrative experience.
Associate Vice President for Operations
Mr. Price is the Associate Vice President for Operations. Mr. Price was essential in the development of the current facilities and in providing the ongoing college facilities oversight. Mr. Price oversees the building maintenance and grounds, information technology support, and the audiovisual support. In addition, Mr. Price oversees the network and communications agreements with Virginia Tech and the off campus housing. Mr. Price has over 23 years in operations.
Associate Vice President for International and Appalachian Outreach
Dr. Sutphin is the Associate Vice President, International Outreach. Dr. Sutphin has over 35 years of education experience. He oversees the rural and international outreach programs at VCOM.
Vice Dean, Virginia Campus
Dr. Willcox is the Vice Dean, Virginia Campus. Dr. Willcox was previously the full time Assistant Dean for the Arizona region for Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM) where she oversaw the medical student program and served as the medical director for the Physician Assistants program. Dr. Willcox also served as the Director of Medical Education for the Arizona programs in OPTIK (KCOM’s OPTI). Dr. Willcox brought with her the knowledge about affiliations, rotation scheduling, and student experiences in clinical settings, as well as student disciplinary procedures. Dr. Willcox has 20 years of higher education experience.
Dr. Januchowski is the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs, Carolina Campus. Dr. Januchowski was previously the Director of Medical Education and Program Director of the Osteopathic Family Medicine Program at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. He also served as the Director for Student Medical Education where he oversaw the medical student educational programs at the hospital. Dr. Januchowski brings with him the knowledge about rotation scheduling, and student experiences in clinical settings as well as a passion for teaching. Dr. Januchowski also has leadership experience in the Army Reserves, where he is currently the commander of a Medical Support Unit. He has been involved in medical education since graduating from residency in 1998.
Dr. Kowalski is the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Carolinas Campus. A graduate of the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1983, Dr. Kowalski completed a rotating internship, psychiatry residency, and child psychiatry fellowship at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Board Certified in Psychiatry and Child Psychiatry, Dr. Kowalski began work within the South Carolina Department of Mental Health in 1993, rising to the position of Medical Director at the William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute in Columbia, SC where he was active in teaching child psychiatry residents and medical students.
Dr. Kowalski is a past president of the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners, the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society, the American Association of Osteopathic Examiners and the American College of Osteopathic Neurologists and Psychiatrists. Dr. Kowalski has also served on prominent committees of the Federation of State Medical Boards, the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners and the American Osteopathic Association.
